The original 2007 Apple iPhone and the iPhone 3G released in 2008 were greeted with both excitement and dismay as it became clear that the phone was going to be a must-have consumer item but was also not going to be freely available for purchase, but rather only bundled with a contract, through carriers that would have an exclusive deal with Apple.

Furthermore, it seemed that unlocking the iPhone was not going to be a simple matter as it had a proprietary system that could not be circumvented by the usual methods.

Just remember that the iPhone is still very much an exclusive item, so don’t expect to get off VERY cheaply! Also be careful to check whether the model is an unlocked iPhone, or an iPhone 3G because it isn’t always clear – read the description carefully.
